She spent almost a decade writing about various sports on behalf of The Washington Post, including football, tennis, and basketball. Nichols was hired by ESPN at the beginning of 2004. Unguarded With Rachel Nichols was the first show she produced and hosted. The show aired on CNN International as well as CNN. More than 1 billion people saw it on the air worldwide. Nichols reported with TNT at the time, covering NBA broadcasts like playoff games, regular season games or All-Star teams. The work she did with TBS also included golf and baseball coverage, as well as Final Four broadcasts by CBS. Through the history of 42 years of this award, this was the first time that women were among the 200+ nominees.
